Just wanted to share some pics of my 2001 Submariner 16610 I got 20 years ago in Sept. This has the holes case/Solid end links/ flat 4 insert and the interesting font you rarely see which people call it flat S in the word submariner (well the whole word is flat font) .
I think the 16610 has the best wrist presence of the three. It wears quite a lot "larger" than the 14060. I feel this is an advantage, especially on a bigger wrist. And as I stated in the review the cyclops version of Submariner has .
For a 16610, you may want to consider going a few years older and get a tritium dial 16610. They are tritium dial and hands from around 1997 or earlier. Personally, I think tritium has a bit better collector potential. COMPARATIVE REVIEW: The Rolex Submariner 16610 vs. the Rolex Submariner 116610 | Luxury Tyme: The Rolex Reference Page
The most striking difference is the 16610 offers the date feature (with cyclops); 14060 does not. To accomodate the date, the 16610 has a slightly larger and neglibibly thicker case. Also, 14060 has lug holes, whereas after a certain MY (which I do not recall) the 16610 no longer offered them. Very Good advice if you want to start at the top of the 16610 case heap and avoid many hassles. The ST cases are less $$ than 'Vnam' type cases and are more consistent in quality but they have no numbers or letters. Iirc an ETA 2824 will also fit in an ST case with a spacer like mentioned above.

After a long road and experimentation with numerous other watch brands, I've finally pulled the trigger on my first rolex - A U serial 16610. Very happy with everything so far but quick question for the more experienced collectors. dial markings indicate this was the tritium version however lume is very obviously luminova.
